Illuminate

Winter sun sets low these days

painting the steel blue water

in flames of gold.

I see a young woman on my walk

sitting at an old wooden desk on the damp sand,

writing in a big book as if the cold

means nothing to her fast-moving hand.

A white painted door stands propped up

at the edge of the windswept beach

as if waiting for the knock that might change the world.

In time, I come across a small brown wren

sitting upon a wall of stone,

its bright eyes turned towards the setting sun

and in that moment, I understood

some of the words the language of beauty

has been speaking all along.

This morning’s sunrise illuminating the buildings and mountains outside our windows after yesterdays snowfall (Vancouver, B.C.).

It’s funny how the beauty of language isn’t always communicated through words, but rather through the beauty in the world around us- through the flutter of a bird’s wings, through the magic of a stunning sunset, even through the chilliest of winter days. 😊

Its the sudden snow fall, bringing change, all seeking the sun, praising its daily route, warming hearts and hands. The quiet snow brings, setting on a busy city, smiles on faces, blowing the flakes with frosty breath, a gift to all , as the chill heightens our awareness and we like the bird pay homage to a greater known.

I love this phrase “ a white painted door stands propped up at the edge of the windswept beach
as WAITING FOR THE KNOCK THAT MIGHT CHANGE THE WORLD”. I love that image. You never cease to amaze me my lovely friend.

    • Hello, dear neighbour! On my seawall walk I came across some film students and their props, they were filming a scene at English Bay and suddenly the words to this poem started to make themselves known! Thank you (always!) for your unwavering support, Huguette!

I just simply love how you find magic whenever you go out on your walks. What seems like the ordinary for most people, you see the beauty in the sights that you behold. Stunning, simply stunning Kimberlee.

  10. I am reading a book called ‘ Letters from a Father to her Daughter’ by Jawaharlal Nehru. The author describes about the many stories that nature has to tell us – from the tiny smooth pebble to the beautiful mountains, the stories that lay hidden in them all will be more realistic than a fairy tale. Your beautiful poem brought back the words in that book.
