Passenger

Among summer flowers and dark earth

I spied a red velvet starfish,

an exotic bloom plucked from its ocean home

dropped by a careless hand or mother gull

upon an unknown world.

A world saturated in golden light

and still air,

the memory of cold depths and moon tossed waves

fading fast –

a passenger riding on the flotsam of chance

here today, gone tomorrow

intersecting realms to dazzle these human eyes.

A gorgeous bloom captured near the lawn bowling greens in Stanley Park (Vancouver, B.C.).

I really loved this Kimberlee! Loved how strong the contrast descriptions were. Summer flowers-dark earth, golden light-cold depths. Stumbling across a starfish is not a common thing to see. I’m amazed at all the things you experience every time you venture out.

    • I now carry a notebook with me everywhere I go (even on picnics!) because I never know what might cross my path – we used to be able to see an abundance of starfish at the edge of the sea but they are harder to find these days so to see one lying in a West End garden stirred my imagination! Thank you so much for taking the time to leave these lovely words…

Love this. Laying in bed, this lets my mind wander, down to the park and walkway, and visualize the colors, and brightens my afternoon.

Beautiful poetic way to remind us that we are all just passengers on this earth. Your photo is magical. Have a great weekend.

    • It’s good to take a break, I’ve been doing the same – I recently took in the Bob Gruen photography exhibit at the Pendulum Gallery downtown, it was bliss to take the time to wander through and enjoy his work (he has taken some wonderful pictures of John Lennon, Leonard Cohen & others!)!
