Traveller with Limited Vision

She makes her way, unafraid

a square white sign taped to her metal walker,

trusting that those who head in her direction

will honour safe passage.

Amid the roar of the rough ocean

a flock of geese fly overhead as she walks,

shuffling through nature’s discarded treasure

the warmth of the sun upon her smiling face.

We have met once or twice before

beneath dusk’s dark mantle,

down by the lagoon that isn’t lost,

watching a plush beaver kit foraging in the wet grass

leaving me forever astonished at how freely she lives,

inspiring me, reminding me, to do the same

with eyes wide open.

An autumn view of the city (Vancouver, B.C.) near Coal Harbour and Lost Lagoon.

Most people have to make a conscious effort to live freely… how ironic is that?

Your imagery is lovely, as always. As is that stunning autumn scene!

Kimberlee, you never cease to amaze me with your artistry of words. I’m always amazed at how you tie in nature with such vivid imagery. Just once I’d like to see how your mind unravels these experiences and transpose them onto paper with your choice of words.

    • I’m a lifelong reader & started to write at a very young age…I’ve always written on my travels and lately (because of the practice of posting most weeks) find inspiration all around me so have to carry a small notebook with me…thank you (always!) for leaving such lovely, thoughtful words!

  5. I like the poem itself, but since the title came first I was confused; I thought it was about the character in the poem instead of the narrator. I eventually figured it out of course, but if I was an editor considering publishing it, I would have asked you for permission to put the title at the bottom of the poem as if the narrator was signing a letter.

Actually nothing to do with the narrator, could be about me, her Mom struggling trying to work hard to lay the metal appendage down, and be free again. We live in an area where the walker is very prevalent keeping us moving, living, and enjoying. It is about all of us, collectively, striving to be who we were.

      • Thank you, Mom! It’s true, in our small corner of the world, people using walkers are keeping stride with those of us who don’t…soon you’ll be walking on your own again, thank goodness you’re not afraid to seek out its help when you need to!

    • Hey, thank you so much for stopping by & commenting, I really appreciate your feedback…the idea that both the character and narrator could be the same person is intriguing, however, I’m not a traveller with limited vision in the literal sense but perhaps in another sense…we all wander our worlds with limited vision in one way or another, I believe!

Great poem. I especially like the ending, “Leaving me forever astonished at how freely she lives,
inspiring me, reminding me, to do the same with eyes wide open.” Beautifully inspiring.
